Use these simple techniques to maximize the benefit of each and every tutoring session!

Before your session... prepare yourself!

Before meeting with your tutor, make sure you have tried to do your questions on your own first.  The more work you have to show your tutor, the faster the tutor will be able to zero in on the area in which you need help.  Also, if you have tried the questions first, you will have a better idea of what you don't understand, and where you need help.

During your session ... learn to do by doing!

We learn through our mistakes, and your tutor is there to help you learn.  Don't be afraid to dive in and try something, even if you are not sure if you are correct.  You will learn more by doing than by watching, so participate in your sessions as much as possible.  Your tutor will guide you and help out when you run into problems, but the more you can "be in the driver's seat", the more you will learn and remember.

After your session ... practise!

You will cover important things in your tutoring session.  When you review your work, and try additional problems afterwards, you will solidify your learning even further.  If you take music lessons, you will know that although the lessons are critical, you won't learn to play just by attending lessons - you need to practise on your own.  Similarly, when you take "math lessons", you also need to practise what you are learning between the sessions.  Remember, practise makes perfect - both in music and in math.
